The AS Val (Russian: Автомат Специальный Вал, or Special Automatic Rifle "Shaft") is an assault rifle developed in 1987, chambered for the 9x39mm subsonic cartridge. The rifle features an integrated silencer, for use in stealth missions. It is currently in use by the Spetsnaz branch of the Russian Army. The VSS Vintorez is a sniper rifle system designed from the AS Val rifle.
The AS Val is categorized as an assault rifle in the Rainbow Six universe.
