Grace's skills earned a National Scholarship at KAIST (Korean Advanced Institute of Science and Technology), but after graduating decided to join the Army. Her athleticism and daring paid off, and she was assigned to the ROK Army Special Warfare Command before earning a spot in the 9th Special Forces Brigade known as the Ghosts. Despite her unorthodox behavior within the highly disciplined ROK army, she gained notice for her exemplary tech skills and for being highly adaptable to situations. After Grace participated in joint training with Detachment K Green Berets, the American instructors encouraged her to try out with the 707th Special Mission Battalion: White Tigers.

Grace's skills earned a National Scholarship at KAIST (Korean Advanced Institute of Science and Technology), but after graduating she decided to enlist in the Republic of Korea Army (ROK) and was assigned to the 5163 Army Division. Looking for a change from office life, Grace earned her place in the 9th Special Forces Brigade, known as the Ghost corps, where she trained in mountaineering, survival techniques, and guerilla warfare.

  +
Despite her unorthodox behavior within the highly disciplined ROK army, she gained notice for her exemplary tech skills and for being highly adaptable to situations. During joint training with Detachment K Green Berets, the American instructors encouraged her to focus on breaching defenses and exploiting weaknesses in networks. They also encouraged Grace to try out with the 707th Special Mission Battalion: White Tigers.
The White Tigers were a better fit for her skills, but Grace inadvertently butted heads with Major General Kuh, an old guard soldier with political ties all the way up to the Blue House, who followed orders to the letter and expected unflinching loyalty from his subordinates. Kuh made life difficult for Grace, preventing her from exploiting her full potential.

Grace heard about Rainbow during training exercises with the SAS, and it sounded like the opportunity she had been seeking... the chance to contribute through her strengths. She knew that Major General Kuh would never put her on the list, so she did what she always did and thought outside of the box.

  +
In 2017, Grace became an official member of Rainbow, much to the surprise of Major General Kuh, who was not happy about it. Kuh started to actively get Grace expelled from the White Tigers in order to threaten her position on Rainbow. As a result, Grace became suspicious of fellow White Tiger Chul Kyung Hwa for spying on her for Kuh as he was coincidently recruited into Rainbow not long after she was. Grace started to work closely with Masaru "Echo" Enatsu in Rainbow's R&D lab to engineer new countermeasure technologies.

In late 2019, Harry Pandey threw the first annual Tournament of Champions to serve as the ultimate test for Rainbow Operators under The Program. Grace's team qualified for the final match and she managed to eliminate Taina "Caveira" Pereira with a shot to the head. Shortly thereafter, Grace and Elias "Blitz" Kotz were eliminated by Jack "Pulse" Estrada after the detonation of a nitro cell. Despite this, Grace's team secured the championship after Yumiko "Hibana" Imagawa managed to eliminate Estrada.
Now Dokkaebi is a member of Rainbow much to the surprise of Major General Kuh, who is not happy about it. He wants her drummed out of the White Tigers, but Dokkaebi could not be happier. She is among men and women who reward asymmetrical thinking even though she knows she now has a target on her back. More so, she is sure the other ROK operator, Chul Kyung Hwa, is spying on her. She needs to work twice as hard, but Grace feels twice as motivated now.

Psychological Profile
Grace plays with expectation because she wants people to underestimate her, but it is different with Rainbow. Before she knew how to control the situation and was never afraid of failure until the stakes became this critical. Rainbow Six was her most daring stunt and she knows she's alienated herself from the Korean military; any slip up at this point will see her drummed out of the military entirely, and this has added pressure to perform, improve, and succeed.

Psychological Report
  +
Grace Nam is playful, clever, serious, and reckless as her codename — Dokkaebi —implies. She's also mischievous. Recent reports say she's been pushing herself beyond her limits and the team has expressed concern that she's over-confident. Added to that, we have past disciplinary reports stating that her actions have been "unorthodox," which I can believe. I was there when she hacked the system; I saw the promise when other people wanted her punished. [...]
  +
  +
Nam's a talented operator. But it's important to note that she's one of the younger Rainbow recruits and has little combat experience. This job is intense, and the stakes are high. Some days, I have the impression she would rather be behind her computer, controlling things from where no one can touch her. But she wants to improve; she wants to change. And to do that, she has to challenge herself.
  +
  +
I'm certain the over-confidence is about fear. She's afraid she doesn't belong, that she isn't good enough. As for past disciplinary hearings, the shortcomings are with the commanders, not with Nam. A talented hacker isn't just someone who's good with code, they're a creative thinker with the ability to see connections the rest of us can't. Yes, there's recklessness. Yes, there's an element of bravado. But whatever else people may see, they must also admit that there's a method to Nam's madness. [...]
  +
  +
When I asked about her childhood, she boasted of schoolyard fights and described the extreme academic pressures she faced. The school would shame parents by publically comparing their children. She's carried this burden of expectation throughout her life, so to have Specialist Chul Kyung "Vigil" Hwa chastise her creates a friction that Nam will have to address. [...]
  +
  +
She told me her grandparents introduced her to Buddhism when she was little and that she's recently begun visiting the temple again. I'm reassured. This is her way to cleanse her mind and spirit. Her pursuit of inner balance will allow Nam to achieve her full potential. Her bluster may irritate operators such as Specialist Yumiko "Hibana" Imagawa, but I say let her be.

But since I doubt most can understand anyway, here goes... My Logic Bomb is known as slag code because it looks like bits and pieces of waste code. Dokkaebi Operator Video

Grace Nam (Hangeul: 남은혜, Nam Eun Hye), codenamed Dokkaebi, is an Attacking Operator featured in Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege, introduced in the Operation White Noise expansion alongside Zofia and Vigil.[1].

Biography

Grace, named for the incomparable actress Grace Kelly, always broke expectations, even when it meant she stuck out somehow. She scavenged or bought spare components to build her own computers. She played soccer with the neighborhood boys and got into fights with them, but it was her sharp tongue that landed her in trouble with her teachers. She looked and acted like a troublemaker, so they tried to force her to conform to expectations. To survive, Grace learned to soften her image, to better play with and manipulate preconceptions; she bought fake glasses and adopted the geek girl persona.

Grace started to work closely with Masaru "Echo" Enatsu in Rainbow's R&D lab to engineer new countermeasure technologies.[2]

Psychological Profile

Grace plays with expectation because she wants people to underestimate her, but it is different with Rainbow. Before she knew how to control the situation and was never afraid of failure until the stakes became this critical. She is among men and women who reward asymmetrical thinking even though she knows she now has a target on her back. Rainbow was her most daring stunt and she knows she's alienated herself from the Korean military; any slip up at this point will see her drummed out of the military entirely, and this has added pressure to perform, improve, and succeed.[3]

Psychological Report

Grace Nam is playful, clever, serious, and reckless as her codename — Dokkaebi —implies. She's also mischievous. Recent reports say she's been pushing herself beyond her limits and the team has expressed concern that she's over-confident. Added to that, we have past disciplinary reports stating that her actions have been "unorthodox," which I can believe. I was there when she hacked the system; I saw the promise when other people wanted her punished. [...]

Gameplay Description

A Medium Armored Operator, Dokkaebi comes equipped with her Ballistic Armor Military Laptop, Logic Bomb. This device can upload a virus into the Defenders' phones and cause them to buzz incessantly until they reset it manually. If a Defender is killed and Dokkaebi is with the Attackers, she can hack these phones to gain access to their CCTV feeds.

  • Activating Dokkaebi's Logic Bomb will cause all Defenders' phones to emit a large buzzing sound, revealing their positions.
  • Activating the ability forces Dokkaebi into a roughly 3-second animation, during which she cannot move or shoot.
  • Defenders cannot access their Cameras while the Logic Bomb is in effect.
  • The Logic Bomb can only be activated twice per round.
  • Defenders within the effective range of Mute's Signal Disruptor are not affeced by the Logic Bomb when it activates.
  • The effects of the Logic Bomb persist on a Defender until:
  • The effects have lasted for 12 seconds.
  • The Defender interacts with their phones to turn them off, playing a roughly 3-second animation during which they cannot move or shoot.
  • IQ can detect the Defenders' phones with her Electronics Detector when the Defenders are trying to turn them off.
  • The Defender moves into the effective range of a Mute's Signal Disruptor.
  • When Dokkaebi is on the Attacking team, Defenders will drop phones upon death. Dokkaebi can hack these phones by interacting with them, giving all Attackers access to all Defender cameras. These include the CCTV, Bulletproof Cameras, Valkyrie's Black Eyes, Echo's Yokai, Maestro's Evil Eye, and Attacker drones hacked by Mozzie.
  • IQ can detect dropped phones with her Electronics Detector.
  • The dropped phones are destroyable by any source of damage.
  • The hacking process forces Dokkaebi into a roughly 5-second animation, during which she cannot move or shoot.
  • Hacking a Defender's phone is seperate from the Logic Bomb.
  • Attackers do not gain control over Defender gadgets controlled through the camera menu, namely Echo's Yokai, Maestro's Evil Eyes, and drones hacked by Mozzie. Their controls all remain exclusive to their owners, though Attackers do have access to their cameras' views.

Strategies

Synergies

  • IQ is able to detect phones through walls while defenders are trying to turn them off.
  • Jackal can aid in tracking down Defenders, isolating them to get to their phones.
  • Using the Logic Bomb alongside Lion's EE-ONE-D can force the Defenders into a difficult position where they cannot move or stay still. However, it is not recommended to use these gadgets at the same time.

Counters

  • Dokkaebi is vulnerable to enemy fire whilst she is using her Logic Bomb, meaning if she dies before her hacking is completed, it will be prevented.
  • Defenders can manually destroy dropped phones to prevent Dokkaebi from hacking into them.
  • Mute's Signal Disruptor can effectively counter Dokkaebi's Logic Bomb by making defenders immune to its effects.
  • Vigil is not immune to the initial hacking of his phone, but he's able to remove himself from any hacked camera feed with his ERC-7.

"Uploads a virus that forces enemy devices to emit a loud noise, thereby compromising their position."
— In-game description

Grace utilizes the Ballistic Armor Military Laptop, codenamed Logic Bomb, which she uses to hack enemy PDA tactical devices. The program downloads a virus of her making that can bypass firewalls, turning surrounding devices on and emitting a loud noise to compromise an enemy’s position. The program is short and self-erasing to prevent anyone from unraveling her code and building software to counter Logic Bomb.[1]

Device Evaluation

Device: Ballistic Armor Military Laptop "Logic Bomb"
Operator: Specialist Grace "Dokkaebi" Nam
Evaluation Lead: Specialist Grace "Dokkaebi" Nam

Six wants everyone to learn how the others are using their gadgets, and as R&D Director Mira wants them ASAP. So here I am. Not sure about giving away my programming secrets. But since I doubt most can understand anyway, here goes... My Logic Bomb is known as slag code because it looks like bits and pieces of waste code. All programs above a certain size have "cruft," expressions that used to serve a purpose but now just take up space. As my professor said, WET code is easiest to hide in, but DRY is easier to exploit.

It slips into the operating system of a device and executes a command (that I designed). It's smart enough to adapt and self-replicate to survive. Any Defender with a phone is vulnerable. Ring. Ring. Ring. Location revealed. And once that code executes ... BOOM. CCTV hack surveillance. I'm all eyes! Jjang!

I've heard there are some counter-hacks in the works. And that Mute's working on jamming It. Don't get too smug, Mute! Whatever you do, I'll find a way around it!

Haengsyo!

Trivia

  • Dokkaebi (Hangeul: 도깨비) are supernatural creatures from Korean folklore, which use their powers to interact with humans, either by playing tricks on them or helping them.
  • Her Korean name, "은혜" (Romaja: Eun Hye) is a literal translation of "Grace", and "남" (Romaja: Nam), which means "South" in Korean, is a common last name in South Korea.
  • Dokkaebi uses her tablet instead of a PDA to view drone feeds.
  • When she hacks the defenders' camera feed, Defenders will see the phrase "까불지 마" (Romaja: Kkabulji ma) displayed in their feed alongside her icon, which roughly translates as "Don't mess with me."[4][5]
  • Dokkaebi distrusts fellow 707th SMB Operator Chul Kyung "Vigil" Hwa. While she believes Vigil was sent to monitor her to spare South Korea from embarrassment, he on the other hand simply wants to make sure he has nothing negative to report from her that threatens her place in Rainbow, knowing fully well that she has made enemies in the ROK military that wish to see her gone.[6][7]
  • Dokkaebi is on friendly terms with SAT Operator Masaru "Echo" Enatsu. Despite this, the two often get competitive when it comes to outdoing each other in the workshop.[6]
  • In the cinematic "The Hammer and the Scalpel" she is counseled by Harry, the new Six.[8]
    • She is referred to be Harry as the Scalpel, while Thatcher represents the Hammer.
    • She gives the V sign to Thatcher as an insult, a sort of British "middle finger", which he had done moments before, perhaps accidentally, whilst criticizing her reliance on technology.
  • The ringing sound effects of the phones are taken directly from Watch Dogs. It is the same sound Aiden Pearce's phone makes.
  • Dokkaebi is the first operator to smile in her operator portrait.[9]
  • Dokkaebi thinks Caveira is 'scary'. Dokkaebi is intimidated by Caveira and Caveira is fully aware of this. Harry Pandey notes that Dokkaebi is going to have to 'hold on her own'.[10]
