Not to be confused with Echo Team

"Being efficient is just being lazy, but in a clever way."
— Ubisoft's official quote for Echo's gadget

Masaru Enatsu (Japanese: 江夏 優[3], Enatsu Masaru), codenamed Echo, is a Defending Operator featured in Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege, introduced in the Operation Red Crow expansion alongside Hibana.[4]

Biography

Masaru Enatsu grew up in Suginami City, Tokyo. This heavily populated city center is home to several animation studios and technology companies. At 16 years old, Enatsu was already challenging the robotics field by creating autonomous flying robots capable of search-and-rescue missions in highly difficult conditions. Two years later, he won the International Aerial Robotics Competition (IARC) and is known as having pushed the limits of what flying robots could accomplish.

Enatsu was noticed by the National Police Security Bureau during his studies in Science and Engineering at the Tokyo Metropolitan University. Enticed to test his devices on the field, he entered the National Police Academy. A year later, he joined the Tokyo Metropolitan, Police Department Special Unit.

Efficiency-obsessed and blunt, Enatsu is a talented officer despite his apathetic nature. In the wake of Nagoya's hostage crisis in 2007, Enatsu decided to transfer to the Aichi Prefectural Police Department Special Unit.[5]

Psychological Profile

Singularly focused, Enatsu's blunt communication style divides group harmony. His tendency to dismiss feedback has kept him from advancing to a higher rank.[6]

Gameplay Description

A Heavy Armored Operator, Echo's unique gadgets are two hovering drones called Yokai, which can stick to flat surfaces on a ceiling and cloak, as well as emit ultrasonic bursts that can disorient the enemy.

  • Much like Attacker drones, Echo throws the Yokai when deploying them.
  • While unable to jump like normal Drones, the Yokai have the ability to launch itself vertically upwards. If a Yokai comes into contact with a flat ceiling (and certain slanted surfaces), it will attach and secure itself. In this state, the Yokai will cloak itself and allow Echo to use its ultrasonic blasts.
  • The Yokai have a 2-second cooldown between jumps.
  • The Yokai's jump is limited vertically to 5 meters.
  • If a Yokai does hit a surface it cannot latch to, it will shake for a second before falling back down.
  • The Yokai's ultrasonic blast is a pulse of sound that disorientates anyone caught in its wake, including Echo and other Defenders.
  • The blast only needs to hit an Operator on a part of their body to disorientate them.
  • The ultrasonic blasts cancel most actions that their targets are performing when hit, such as Thermite deploying an Exothermic Charge or an Attacker planting a defuser in Bomb. Continuous actions, such as Montagne extending his shield, will be canceled by the blast. One notable action that the blast cannot cancel is pulling the needle from Lesion's Gu mines.
  • The ultrasonic blasts also cancels Finka's Adrenal Surge if it was activated. However, another one activated afterwards will override the disorientation.
  • The effects of the ultrasonic blast are follows:
  • Temporary blindness immediately after the blast.
  • Hearing disrupted.
  • Significantly disrupted vision; the player's vision is blurred, the player will see shaking double vision, the peripheral vision is blacked out, and the player can see scattered dots of light.
  • It takes around 10 seconds for affected Operators to recover from the effect. However, moving will lengthen the recovery time to up to twice its normal duration.
  • Moving will also worsen the disorientation effects, resulting in more peripheral vision being blacked out and causing a strong screen sway.
  • The Yokai can only have up to two ultrasonic charges in reserve each. However, they can recharge these charges every 20 seconds.
  • The blasts' effective range is 14 meters.
  • Although ultrasonic blasts appear to have travel time, they actually travel instantaneously.
  • The disorientation effect does not stack with the concussion effect from Ela's Grzmot Mines, and the newer stun effect will simply overwrite the old one.
  • The Yokai's cloaking mechanism render them largely invisible after one second of being on the ceiling.
  • The cloaking mechanism temporarily disables for 2 seconds after an ultrasonic blast.
  • There is a slight white rippling effect to the cloaked surface.
  • As the cloak works by copying the coloring of the ceiling above the Yokai, it is less well-concealed when latched close to special features or patterns on the ceiling.
  • All Defenders can use Yokai's cameras, but only Echo can control the Yokai drone.
  • When hovering on the ground, the camera on the Yokai drones can pan up to 40 degrees upwards.
  • When attached to a ceiling, the cameras cannot pan up, have more freedom in surveillance as they can see everything below their level.
  • Echo and his teammates can scan and tag enemies with the Yokai drones. Scanning does not uncloak them.
  • Even when dead, Echo and his teammates can still see through the Yokai's camera feed when in support mode.
  • Yokai's camera feed are identified as a dark red dot on the camera selection HUD.
  • The Yokai will lose signal and deactivate if they move outside the defending area for more than 3 seconds.
  • The effects of losing signal are similar to the effects of Mute's Signal Disruptor on Attacker drones, with visual disruption before complete signal loss.
  • The line "LOSING SIGNAL, GET BACK INSIDE" will appear on the HUD when losing signal.
  • Echo is immune to Dokkaebi's Logic Bomb, having developed their systems in tandem with each other.
  • Echo also does not drop a phone, as he uses a wrist-mounted device to view cameras.
  • Even when Dokkaebi hacks into the Defender's CCTV system, she will be unable to grant Attackers access to the cameras on Echo's Yokai.

Strategies

  • Tall flat surfaces (shelves, closets) provide good cover for Yokai. Echo can throw Yokai up to the spot, attach it to the ceiling, and hide Yokai by dropping back onto the shelf after using a blast.

Synergies

  • An exception to the Shock Wire destroying allied gadgets, the Yokai are able to touch Bandit's Shock Wires without being destroyed. Thus, Bandit can work with Echo without worrying about destroying the latter's Yokai.

Counters

  • The Yokai are remote-controlled electronic gadgets. However, it has certain characteristics that are shared with electronic gadgets that are "on-person".
  • Thatcher's EMP Grenades will only disable the Yokai for five seconds before reactivating. However, they will drop to the ground if they were attached to the ceiling when they were hit by the EMP, thus uncloaking the drone as well.
  • IQ and her Electronics Scanner can quickly identify the Yokai's location, as well as Echo himself while he's on his PDA, making her the most dangerous detriment to their survival.
  • Twitch's Shock Drones can destroy the Yokai with a single shock dart, but it is unable to see them when cloaked.
  • Cooked Frag Grenades can be useful for destroying Yokai if an approximate location is known, as falling down and moving away takes a considerable amount of time for the Yokai.

"Hovering drone that releases disorienting sonic bursts. Yokai also transmits a video feed to the Operator."
— Yokai Description

Wanting to circumvent ranged weapon limitations, Echo crafted Yokai, an unmanned hovering vehicle. Equipped with an acoustic hailing device, this signature drone can fire ultrasonic bursts that disorient all targets in a given perimeter. Yokai also transmits a video feed to Echo, who keeps his immediate perimeter secure. Embrace the power of technology and embody a turret Defender who can both hold up the siege and support roamers.[4]
