- "Fear clouds the mind. You can try to fight it, but you will not survive this."
— Fenrir
Emil "Fenrir" Svensson is a Defending Operator featured in Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege. He was introduced in the Operation Dread Factor expansion.
Biography[]
- "Fear is a teacher. There’s always a lesson to be learned."
— Fenrir
Svensson was a curious boy growing up in Uppsala, where his parents encouraged his fascination with animal biology by enrolling him in every science class they could find. On track to attend his hometown’s University to pursue his passion, his focus shifted following his mandatory service. He learned that he had an affinity for physical fitness and tactical organization and became especially interested in how combat affects soldiers’ emotional states. Following his service period, he studied neurochemistry and joined the Swedish Armed Forces, quickly earning his way up.
As a communicator in the Special Operations Group, he expanded his skillset and aimed to develop strategies that would improve his peers’ performance. When his project to create formulas that alter soldiers’ emotions was denied, his insistence caused him to be discharged. Estranged from his family and made a pariah in the scientific and military communities, he had few options when Deimos approached him. With his newfound partner and funding, Svensson developed his technology until it became evident that he was being used to create a dangerous weapon, with Deimos using the experimental gas to slaughter human subjects. Taking his research with him, Svensson escaped Deimos’s facility and sought out Rainbow.
In early 2023, Svensson escaped from and detonated a compound in Ouro Preto, Brazil, where he was intercepted by a Viperstrike strike team consisting of Nayara "Brava" Cardoso, Marius "Jäger" Streicher, and Aria "Alibi" de Luca. From there, he was escorted back to Rainbow's headquarters and quickly recruited into Redhammer. However, his recruitment was protested by many within Rainbow, including Alibi, Jalal "Kaid" El Fassi, and Ryad "Jackal" Ramírez Al-Hassar.
Soon after his recruitment, a Redhammer strike team consisting of Svensson, El Fassi, César Ruiz "Goyo" Hernández, Saif "Oryx" Al Hadid, Azucena Rocío "Amaru" Quispe, and Sébastien "Buck" Côté was deployed to a marina in Costa Brava, Spain. A group of terrorists had taken several civilians hostage - some of which had worked with Yahata Data Services - and made no demands aside from a boat to use as an escape craft. After losing contact with Jordan "Thermite" Trace due to radio interference, Svensson suggested using one of his F-NATT Dread Mines to distract the hostage takers. Despite violent opposition from Kaid, this plan was accepted by the rest of the task force. After luring the terrorists to an open area, they were blinded by the Dread Mine, allowing Rainbow to intervene with no casualties. Speaking to one of the hostages after, Svensson learned that the group had demanded information about upcoming Rainbow recruitments from the Yahata employee, discovering that a training session was soon to be held at a Tower.

Psychological Report[]
I understand the squad’s reluctance in accepting Specialist Emil “Fenrir” Svensson as one of our own. I was just as skeptical when he approached us, but I couldn’t ignore the possibility that his information on our enemy might give us the upper hand. I figured we could decide what to do with him later.
Deimos is dangerous, and I considered that Svensson might be a spy, so I had Buck join me during interviews. On paper, Fenrir is exactly the type of person Rainbow would seek out to recruit. He’s an intellectual, and an ambitious tactician in peak form. As I learned more about his career path, I realized the traits that led to his military discharge are ones I expect in a member of Redhammer: unflinching drive, conviction, and readiness to put himself in harm’s way when necessary.
I can’t fully absolve him of his work with Deimos, but I can relate to the regret Svensson feels. He had no prior knowledge of the enemy’s operations, so I can’t blame him for accepting the offer. It's easy to get tunnel vision when pursuing groundbreaking research, but eventually you have to come to your senses and notice what's around you. The turning point for him was witnessing Deimos use an unstable version of his fear toxin on his colleagues. As he puts it, his work was meant to help people, not hurt them.
The way I see it, I have my hands on an excellent specialist who knows more about our enemy than any of us do. I’d call that an asset. He passed every test I threw his way, and Buck didn’t raise any red flags. Kaid has protested openly against Fenrir, but he’ll have to come around. We need to take Deimos down.

F-NATT Dread Mine x 5 | |
Fenrir's Unique Gadget is The F-NATT Dread Mine, a throwable device that sticks to walls. While deactivated, the mine is bulletproof, and is activated on Fenrir's command. Once activated, the Dread mine will emit a fear gas cloud whenever an Attacker enters its radius. This gas obscures the vision of any Operator within the cloud, making it impossible to see anything in the distance, and leaving them very vulnerable to attack. Fenrir comes equipped with 5 mines and can activate 3 at a time anywhere on the map.
Synergies[]
- Gadgets that slow down Attackers, such as Clash's Electro Shield, Melusi's Banshee Device, and Lesion's Gu Mines, can help prevent Defenders from escaping the Dread Mine's smoke cloud.
- Camera gadgets such as Valkyrie's Black Eye, Maestro's Evil Eyes and Solis' Electro Scanner can help Fenrir keep track of when Attackers are close to a Dread Mine he can activate.
- Dread Mines can help obscure traps such as Thorn's Razorbloom Shells or Frost's Welcome Mat.
- Caveira can use the Dread Mine's smoke cloud to easily sneak up on an Attacker while using her Silent Step.
Counters[]
- While in their bulletproof state, F-NATT Dread Mines can be destroyed by explosive devices such as Frag Grenades, Ash's Breaching Rounds, Zofia's Impact Grenades, Fuze's Cluster Charges, Kali's LV Lances and Flores' RCE-RATERO Drone. While they are activated, Dread Mines are vulnerable to gunfire and melee attacks.
- Finka's Adrenal Surge can allow Attackers to see a few feet further through the F-NATT's gas.
- Sledge is able to take out a F-NATT Dread Mine in one swing of his Breaching Hammer.
- Impact EMPs and Thatcher's EMP Grenades will cause F-NATT Dread Mines to be disabled. The bulletproof housing opens which exposes the F-NATT to gunfire and melee. If Fenrir is caught in the radius of the EMP, he cannot activate any F-NATT Dread Mines until it wears off.
- IQ can locate Dread Mines with her Electronic Detector.
- Twitch's Shock Drone and Zero's Argus Cameras can destroy activated F-NATT Dread Mines.
- Brava's Kludge Drone can hack activated F-NATT Dread Mines, turning its effects against Defenders. It will also cause deactivated Dread Mines to self destruct.
Notes[]
- If three F-NATT Dread Mines are destroyed whilst active you are not able to use the other 2 F-NATT Dread Mines.
Device Description[]
- "Throwable device that sticks to surfaces and releases a fear-inducing gas when it detects nearby opponents."
— F-NATT Dread Mine Description
The F-NATT Dread Mine is a circular gas mine capable of anchoring to various surfaces. When triggered, the mine will open up and release a thick, non-lethal purple hallucinogenic gas within a set radius, drastically impairing visibility and deafening most sounds to enemies caught inside the mine's proximity.
Device Evaluation[]
Device: F-NATT Dread Mine
Operator: Specialist Emil “Fenrir” Svensson
Evaluation Lead: Specialist Jordan “Thermite” Trace with Specialist Sébastien “Buck” Côté
(Comment E Álvarez: I hope you know what you’re doing. This kind of technology is not something you play around with, Jordan.)
Fenrir presented his final prototype with notes attached. The materials of the case, the molecular structure of the gas, the release mechanism… it’s all outlined. It’s good to know he’s aware of the risk this poses if it’s not perfect. Buck was on standby in case of complications.
At his own insistence, we started by testing on Fenrir to be sure, and then alternated testing methods to eliminate possible variables. The gas is unpleasant, but not dangerous. Fenrir warned us that early iterations of the formula caused extreme aggression, but our tests confirm this modified version to be free of that side-effect. Honestly, this is much more sophisticated than Smoke’s Compound Z8 Grenades.
The F-NATT Dread Mine’s proximity trigger is simple, and the effects are temporary. The package can be changed if needed, but it works fine as is. Buck noted that this device should serve well for flank watching and area denial, both tasks that can be difficult to achieve with limited manpower.
I’m interested to hear about Fenrir’s more “positive” variants. They wouldn’t be much use in the field, but he’s not off the mark when he says inducing emotional responses could have therapeutic effects.
