A hand grenade is a small, light-weight, timed explosive device. Grenades can inflict severe damage against infantry and other soft targets. Most hand grenades used are fragmentation grenades, often abbreviated to "frags", which litter an area with shrapnel, inflicting severe damage on infantry and lightly armored targets.
There are two variants of hand grenades in the Rainbow Six universe. These variants are the M61 and M67 grenades.
- The M61 grenade is a development of the M26 grenade series (specifically the M26A1) that adds an extra safety clip to prevent accidental priming upon vegetation such as during the Vietnam War. THe M61 was the standard grenade amongst US Army forces during the Cold War.
- The M67 grenade is a development of the M33 grenade, itself an improvement of the M26 series of grenades, that was designed in the late 1950s and adopted in 1968 for use by the US Army. It is also known as a "baseball" grenade due to its shape.
