"The steed, the night, and the desert all know me. Now, you do too."
— Jackal

Ryad "Jackal" Ramírez Al-Hassar is an Attacking Operator featured in Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege, introduced in the Operation Velvet Shell expansion alongside Mira.[1]

Biography

Pushed from one family to the next, Ryad emerged from the foster care system when his older brother, Faisal Ramírez, turned 18 and became his legal guardian.

Blaming his shortcomings for the loss of his older brother, Ramírez decided to join the Policía Nacional. He passed the mandatory ESO (Secondary studies) and became a CNP (Cuerpo Nacional de Policía) at 19 years old. He is still investigating his brother's case and to this day, but was unable to find any solid evidence against his brother's murderer.

With strong resolve and broad resourcefulness in difficult terrains, Ramírez joined the Grupo Especial de Operaciones (GEO) to track down HVTs and intercept narcotics shipments.[2]

Psychological Profile

Suffers from chronic insomnia. Ramírez is at risk of developing acute symptoms such as muscular weariness, hallucinations and/or double vision. He must be monitored closely.[3]

Gameplay Description

A Medium Armored Operator, Jackal's unique gadget is the Eyenox Model III, which can track enemy footprints and can identify its targets.

  • The Eyenox is a visor. Jackal spawns with the visor up. Activating the gadget will have Jackal flip the visor down and activate its effects (and downsides, see below). With the Eyenox active, Jackal can see and scan Defender footprints.
  • The Eyenox cannot be turned on or off while holding a Hostage.
  • Defenders create footprints whenever they move, standing or crouching. No footprint is made when the Defender crawls. Only Jackal can see these footprints.
Footprint color

Footprint Color Graph

  • Footprints are color-coded depending on their recency. Trackable footprints start off red at 0 seconds, become yellow at 20, light green at 45, light blue at 65, and disappear at 90.
  • By using the interact key on a footprint, Jackal can scan Defender footprints to track their owner. Scanning footprints takes around 3 seconds and Jackal can only scan footprints within 8 meters of him. This feature also requires Jackal to concentrate on a single set of footprints. If Jackal looks to another set of footprints, even if they belong to the same Defender, the scan will start over.
  • When the scan completes, the footprint's host will be tracked, immediately creating a 3D ping at their location. The tracking lasts 20 seconds, and the position 3D ping is refreshed every 5 seconds during the tracking.
  • If the target was not previously identified, they will be upon scanning, and the Attacking team will all receive the identification point bonus.
  • Jackal and his current target will see the timer for when the next ping will be and how many are leftover.
  • If wanted, Jackal can change targets by scanning a different set of footprints in the duration of the previous scan. This will stop the previous scan from continuing to ping. However, changing targets will still take a usage of the ability, so it is not a recommended tactic.
  • The 8 meter range allows Jackal to track footprints through broken flooring, above or below.
  • The death of a Defender will result in the immediate disappearance of all footprints from that Defender, reducing clutter.
  • There are four types of footprints, with each Operator having one of the four, allowing for potential Operator identification via their footprint type.[4]
Footprints

Footprint chart

  • When playing Terrorist Hunt or Article 5, White Masks do not leave footprints behind, except for Bombers who leave Type D footprints. Jackal can still activate his ability and keep his visor on during the Hunt, but it is purposeless once the Bombers are eliminated.

Synergies

  • Due to the nature of his Eyenox being disrupted by Mute, Attackers such as Thatcher, Twitch, and IQ can be helpful in removing Signal Disruptors.
  • A well-timed scan from Lion's EE-ONE-D compliments Jackal's Eyenox scans, as the targeted victim will be inevitably detected by one or the other.
  • Paired with Finka's Adrenal Surge, conflicting concussion and static effects are reduced for Jackal, allowing him to use his visor more freely. Also, since the Surge reduces ADS time as well, his PDW9 becomes extremely quick to aim down with.
  • Since Gridlock can deploy her Trax Stingers from a floor above, and she also has a shotgun secondary at her disposal, Jackal and she can be an excellent duo for intimidating and trapping Defenders from multiple angles.

Counters

  • Taking damage while the Eyenox is activated will cause a temporary static effect that obscures Jackal's view.
  • While taking damage from gunfire and etcetera does not greatly affect his vision, receiving damage from Bandit's Shock Wire and Kaid's Electroclaw will interfere with his vision incredibly, causing the entire screen to be obscured in static while he is being shocked.
  • Mute's Signal Disruptors will interfere heavily with the Eyenox, which also causes a static effect that obscures Jackal's vision if the visor is active, and grows in intensity the closer to the Disruptor he is. The Disruptor also prevents him from scanning footprints while Jackal is being jammed.
  • However, if Jackal is outside the Disruptor's radius and sees footprints near to a Disruptor, he can still scan them from a safe distance.
  • The concussion effects of Echo's Yokai and Ela's Grzmot Mine will turn Jackal's Eyenox off and prevent him from using it for the effect's duration.
  • Caveira has special interactions with Jackal.
  • While her footsteps are normally visible by Jackal, she will not create those footprints while using her Silent Step.
  • If Jackal is able to scan any footsteps she does leave behind, Caveira is capable of preventing herself from being pinged. This is possible when she is using Silent Step, during which the Eyenox will not ping her location. However, she can still be tracked and will be pinged if she stops using her Silent Step. Since the Silent Step has a shorter duration than the Eyenox scans, it is sometimes impossible for a Caveira to completely avoid being pinged if she is already being scanned.
  • Even if she was in Silent Step during the scan, she will still be identified for the Attacking team (were she not identified prior) regardless of the timing.

Eyenox Model III x 3

"Tracking eyewear that locates targets by revealing and identifying recent footsteps."
— Eyenox Model III Description

Inspired by the FBI’s Quick Capture Platform, the Eyenox Model III was created to offer a mobile tracking device able to both identify and trail a person’s footprints in real-time. This forensic tool was first used to track terrorist cells back to hidden cave complex in the mountains of Afghanistan. Equipped with advanced computer vision, the Eyenox detects invisible details relating to footfall and weight distribution so that you can identify and stalk your target.[1]

Trivia

  • Ramírez's insomnia results from the events that occured on October 8th, 1985. Our experts have concluded that such trauma triggered an acute obsession with patterns in his immediate environment, in which he can detect impressive amounts of irregularities. It should be noted, however, that he is ill-equipped to cope with letting a target go free. He internalized the belief that he lost everything when he failed to follow the man who killed his brother.[5]
  • Jackal's birthday, February 29th, falls on the leap day. However, his birthday is still celebrated and rewarded with a weekly challenge just like every other operator, regardless of whether the day occurs during that year.
  • Interestingly, this is likely not a given birthday (which is common with children under foster/adoption systems), as the year he was previously stated to be born in - 1968 - is in fact a leap year.
  • Thanks to Scriptwriter Farah Brixi, more details were given about Jackal's biography:
Ryad Ramírez Al-Hassar was nine years old during Spain’s political transition, but did not feel the full the impact of these changes until later on. His focus was somewhere else entirely, as he was shifted from one dysfunctional family to the next. A few years later, Ramírez was taken out of the foster care system by his older brother, Faisal, who was now old enough to become his legal guardian.
The Ramírez brothers first appeared in official records on October 8th, 1985 when Ryad was found next to his brother’s dead body in an abandoned house in El Principe Alfonso. Ryad was 17 years old and required urgent medical assistance. With no witness, no murder weapon, and no clear motive, the local authorities treated Faisal’s death as an inconclusive case of street violence.
After that night, Ryad was determined to unravel the events that lead to the loss of his brother. When he turned 19, he finally passed the mandatory qualifications and entered the Cuerpo Nacional de Policía. To further hone his skills on the field, he became a member of the G.E.O.[6]
