"We're bloody trapped here! We need to move. Now!"
— Jimmy Carr

Jimmy Carr is a character that appears in the novel, Rainbow Six. He is a member of a Provisional Irish Republican Army cell led by Sean Grady. In 1999, he took part in a plan to eliminate members of Rainbow by taking Sandra O'Toole and Patricia Clark hostage at a community hospital to use them as bait.

Biography[]

In 1999, Carr was among a group of PIRA members led by Sean Grady. During this time, Carr and the other PIRA members hid from authorities in Ireland, constantly moving from different safe houses and conducting operations covertly. The group was later contacted and met by an old acquaintance of Grady, Dimitriy Popov who informed them of a new counterterrorist group named Rainbow and that they had been responsible for resolving the recent terrorist incident at Bern, Vienna, and World Park.

Popov proposed that PIRA take the wife and daughter of John Clark, Rainbow's Director, hostage from the community hospital they worked at in order to lure Rainbow out to be disposed of. Grady agreed to the operation in exchange for six million dollars and a large quantity of cocaine to further fund PIRA operations. The group then spent the next two weeks planning the operation by scouting the area around the hospital and Hereford Base. Grady determined they would break into two groups with one entering the hospital to take Sandra O'Toole and Patricia Clark hostage while the other would remain outside to provide support and launch a surprise attack on Rainbow and the other responding authorities. Grady stated that everyone would use cell phones to communicate with one another. With the money from Popov, they purchased large Volvo commercial trucks with canvas covers and transported them to an area just outside Hereford Base.

The next day, Carr was placed on the inside team led by Timothy O'Neal. Posing as delivery men, Carr entered the entrance of the community hospital along with O'Neal, Peter Barry, Sam Barry, and Danny McCorley. While they waited for Patricia Clark to meet them at the reception desk, Carr walked back outside and watched a policeman who was parked nearby. Once she arrived, O'Neal and his men produced their guns and took her, Sandra O'Toole, and all other civilians present hostage. Outside, Carr shot at and killed the policeman as he attempted to put his vehicle in reverse. Carr then approached the vehicle to confirm the cop's death before returning to the others. With hostages taken and a cop now dead, Sean Grady contacted the police using the well-known PIRA codename "Patrick Casey" and threatened to kill hostages starting with Clark's wife and daughter unless all political prisoners held in the Albany and Parkhurst prison on the Isle of Wight were released within the next two hours. Carr and the other PIRA members continued to keep watch of the hostages and provide updates to Sean Grady as they waited for Rainbow to arrive to launch their surprise attack. As expected, Rainbow immediately responded to the scene by sending Team-1, led by Peter Covington, who positioned themselves near the PIRA trucks. However, as a result of cell service being jammed by Rainbow's Tim Noonan, Grady was unable to communicate with his men to further coordinate the attack. With no other means to signal the inside team, Grady and the outside team opened fire on Rainbow, killing two operatives and seriously injuring several others.

O'Neal was surprised that Grady had not contacted them before launching the attack on Rainbow. Unsure on what to do next, Carr and the other PIRA members left the hospital and entered their car, unaware that Grady and the outside group had already left the area. O'Neal attempted to drive them to safety but was stopped by Fred Franklin who shot the car's engine block with his sniper rifle. After O'Neal narrowly avoided death from another shot by Franklin, Carr pointed out that they were trapped and needed to move. All five men then ran back into the hospital and retook the hostages as they attempted to figure out what to do next.

A few minutes later, Carr noticed Patricia Clark trying to move away from them, unaware that Julio Vega and George Tomlinson were around the corner. Carr told her to stop moving and pointed his weapon at her, only to have himself shot in the head and killed as he came into George Tomlinson's view. O'Neal and the other PIRA members did not notice this which allowed Patricia to reach Vega. Through several conversations with Paul Bellow, O'Neal and the other PIRA members saw no other options and eventually surrendered. A few hours later, Bellow met with Sean Grady who had been shot, captured, and taken to the hospital on base. While Grady was under the effects of anesthesia from his surgery, Bellow posed as Carr and used a surgeon mask and cap to conceal his face. This enabled Bellow to get Grady to disclose Dimitriy Popov's cover name as well as the Swiss bank account that held their six million dollars.
