The M16 refers to a family of assault rifles all manufactured by Colt's Manufacturing Company that all chamber the 5.56x45mm NATO round. It was made to replace the earlier M14 battle rifle. The M16A2 and A4 variants fire in three-round burst or semi-automatic, while the original M16A1 and A3 variants fire fully-automatic or semi-automatic.
There are variants of the M16 that appear in the Rainbow Six universe. These variants are the M16A2 and M16A4.
- The M16A2 has a thicker barrel end with improved rifling that was designed for use with the newly developed SS190 cartridge. The M16A2 was later replaced by the more modern M16A4.
- The M16A4 has a removable carry handle with a full length Picatinny rail underneath for the attachment of compatible devices.
The M16A2 and M16A4 are categorized as assault rifles in the Rainbow Six universe.
