The MP5 (German: Maschinenpistole 5; English: Machine Pistol Model 5) is a submachine gun derivative of the G3 assault rifle. The MP5 is a submachine gun manufactured by Heckler and Koch that chambers the 9x19mm Parabellum round. The MP5 is one of the most widely used submachine guns in the world.

Although the original MP5 itself does not appear in the Rainbow Six universe, there are several variants of the gun that do:

  • The MP5A2 is a variant that has a fixed buttstock and the "SEF" trigger group (German: Sicher, Einzelfeuer and Feuerstoß, English: Safe, Semi-automatic and Automatic).
  • The MP5A4 is a variant that has a fixed buttstock and 3-round burst fire trigger group.
  • The MP5N is a US Navy model with a "Navy" trigger group (3-position variant, Safe, Semi-automatic, Automatic), a 3-lug/threaded barrel to allow the attachment of a Suppressor and a rubber-padded retractable stock.
  • The MP5 MLI is a newer model which has a triple-rail forearm, quick-release-optic mount and the RAL8000 color scheme.

The MP5 family of submachine guns appears to be the standard issue submachine gun of Team Rainbow in the entirety of the franchise. The MP5 was the standard Rainbow submachine gun in almost every Rainbow Six game to date, except Patriots and Siege.

Vegas[]

The MP5N is a weapon featured in Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Vegas.

Overview[]

Almost every advertisement for the game shows this weapon in one of the main characters hands. The MP5N is available by default in Story Mode. The weapon has medium stopping power and very manageable recoil.Ammunition for the weapon can be found by terrorists in both Story and Terrorist Hunt, since it's the second most used submachine gun by the terrorists in-game. The MP5N is at its best when used in close to mid range engagements, where its rate of fire makes it a force to be reckoned with. It can also be utilized at longer range, especially when paired with an optical sight, due to its stellar accuracy for an SMG. All possible attachments for the weapon are useful since the weapon is extremely useful at all ranges.

Vegas 2[]

Overview[]

It is once again a starting weapon with an attached reflex sight in the first level, Pic des Pyrénées, France, but this time in the hands of Bishop. The weapon itself hasn't suffered many changes since the first game, it was only given more attachments such as the ACOG sight, rifle sight and others. The MP5N still has the same firepower and accuracy as it had in the first game.

Siege[]

"Short to medium range submachine gun. High rate of fire and mobility. Favored by GIGN."
— In-game description

The MP5 is a submachine gun featured in Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege. It is available for use by Doc, Rook and Melusi.

Overview[]

The MP5 has a highly manageable recoil that allows the user to control it with ease. However, it has a rather underwhelming damage output. Combined with the slightly below average fire rate of 800 RPM, this makes the MP5 easily fall into the slightly weak category.

It is capable of taking out Light Armored Operators in four body shots of its effective range in a quarter of a second, while Medium and Heavy Armored Operators take five. Suppressed, the MP5 will be able to take down Light Armored Operators in five body shots, but the other two Armor Types will take six.

Pros[]

  • Low recoil
  • Average rate of fire

Cons[]

  • Low damage output
  • Low single shot damage

Trivia[]

Siege[]

  • In the alpha versions of the game, the MP5 was called by its proper designation, the MP5 MLI.
  • In reality, it would be extremely awkward to perform a tactical reload on an MP5, due to the way the bolt was designed. The bolt rides directly on top of the feed lips of the magazine, blocking a full magazine's entry into the magazine well. This prevents a fully loaded magazine from properly being seated if the bolt is in battery. This is why it is recommended that the bolt is to be locked back during tactical reloads, or a partially full magazine to be inserted. Either way, a 30+1 capacity would be extremely difficult to achieve in real life.
  • The MP5 was previously available on operator Oryx, and was replaced with the more powerful T-5 SMG for balancing reasons.
    • From Operation Steel Wave to Operation Neon Dawn, the MP5 had a short-lived Angled Grip option available on Oryx and Melusi (as a weapon swap took place for balancing reasons). Melusi originally had the T-5 SMG while Oryx had the MP5, but they switched these weapons and Melusi ended up with the MP5 Angled Grip option. However, this only applied to Oryx's and Melusi's MP5, and was not available on Doc's nor Rook's MP5).
      • As of Patch 5.4.3, the Angled Grip attachment is no longer available for balancing reasons.
