Nightmare Fog is the second Crisis Event available for Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Extraction. The event introduces a limited-timed gamemode, a new Protean, a new gadget, cosmetics, and exclusive Studies.
Announced on May 9th, 2022, it was released on May 12th, 2022 and concluded on June 2nd, 2022.[1]
Overview[]
The objective of the event is to weaken and destroy the Toxic Tree in order to clear the Fog. Like normal Incursions, rounds feature three objectives between each subzone. The first objective is randomized between Specimen, Nest Tracking, Triangulation, Hunt, and Shutdown. The second objective is a variant of Decontamination. Unlike the standard Decontaminatiom, Nests are scattered around the subzone and feature a pink coloring. Once all Nests are destroyed, the objective will be complete after a sample is taken from the Abberant Nest. Completing this objective will subsequently weaken the Toxic Tree.
The third subzones features the new Removal objective that is exclusive to the event. Similar to MIA Rescue, players must first locate the Toxic Tree within the subzone and start destroying its anchor points in order to weaken it. If Decontamination was completed in the previous subzone, the Toxic Tree will have half of its health. After an Anchor Point is destroyed, waves of enemies will spawn and start converging on players. Like an Archæan Tree, the Toxic Tree will send bursts of energy from its Anchor Points to its core in order to strengthen itself. Once all Anchor Points have been destroyed, the Toxic Tree will expose its core, allowing players to destroy it with a Takedown.
The high difficulty of the event stems from the fog produced by the Toxic Tree. This purple fog is present on all three subzones. Aside from severely limiting vision like Chimera Fog, this fog causes hallucinigenic effects depending on a player's exposure level which is shown on a meter on the lower left side of the screen. At 30% exposure, players will start hallucinating sounds and see enemies that arent really there, potentially causing players to waste resources and distracting them from real enemies. Halluicinated enemies will either stand stll, rush at players, rapidly appear and disappear, or appear outside a player's field of view and disappear when looked at. At 65% exposure, players will start experiencing tunnel vision, motion blur, and distored vision. Finally, at 100% exposure, edges on a player's screen will deteriorate further and their HP will start draining.
Players can counteract the effects of the Fog by picking up Neurostims which will reduce their Neurotoxin levels by 35%. Neurostims are located in safe zones around a subzone, including airlocks. These safe zones are free of the Fog and will allow players breathing room to resupply and engage enemies without increasing their exposure level. The event also introduces the Rush Pistol which will temporarily boost a player's movenent speed and make them invulnerable to damage.

Tree Weakening | ||
---|---|---|
Objective | In Nightmare Fog, as a squad, weaken Toxic Trees 3 times. | Dizzy Charm |
Brief | "The Toxic Tree, Neoplasm, these groups of nests… They're all connected. You'll have to weaken the links so INDEX can analyze fog residuals.." - Ash | |
Logbook | Crisis Log NMF: "The Nightmare Fog shares its core chemical properties with the Chimera Fog, which we already knew about. What's different, now that's the surprise... After a comparative spectral analysis, the most probable match for its particular mix of gasses and dust is... in the filaments of the Crab Nebula, 6,500 lightyears away. How can this be possible? It's got Mira pacing though." - Ash |
Sane In The Brain | ||
---|---|---|
Objective | In Nightmare Fog, destroy a Toxic Tree and extract without your Neurotoxin Level reaching a critical state 3 times. | Noxedimus Headgear |
Brief | "This Fog has a debilitating effect on us, but Neurostims can help boost the brain's resilience so we can still study it." - Ash | |
Logbook | Crisis Log NMF: "Pioneer post-incursion cells helped us monitor our Operators' health. The lab listed the Nightmare Fog symptoms: short-term memory loss, disorientation, euphoria, anxiety, paranoia and... hallucinations. Thermite compared it to the Martini effect that deep-sea divers experience, but worse, as the effects last longer. Didn't know he was into of scuba diving..." - Ash |
Nest Removal | ||
---|---|---|
Objective | As a squad, take down 80 nests. | Rush Pistol REACT Tech |
Brief | "For REACT R&D to fine-tune this new tech, they need INDEX to collect Operator data on adrenaline levels during Takedowns." - Ash | |
Logbook | Crisis Log NMF: "Thanks to the data INDEX gathered, the Rush Pistol is ready. Each shot allows for accelerated blood clotting, thus better injury
mitigation. It also increases maximal oxygen uptake, resulting in an overall boost in speed and conditioning. And…… now that we have it, Thermite has updated his pep talks with: "No one lags behind." - Ash |
Crystal Clear | ||
---|---|---|
Objective | Complete all 5 Crisis Studies. | N/A |
Brief | "Reports keep coming in about the Nightmare Fog. Despite the dangers, it's our only chance to understand it. This fog. We've got to find out everything we can and get to the bottom of it." - Ash | |
Logbook | Crisis Log NMF: "Mira sent me the latest data on the Crisis studies. We made another breakthrough. We have evidence that links the Nightmare Fog and the Crab Nebula to our theory that crises are Parasite Mutations, albeit on a larger scale. They're the resurgence of the Parasite's past defensive behaviors. It draws from its microbial memory to figure out the best way to survive. We now understand how this happened overnight." - Ash |
