Cut content
The subject of this article, Operation Amber Throne, has been cut from the final version of a Rainbow Six game.

For the first mission of the expansion, Operation Desert Dragon.
Not to be confused with Operation Amber Sky.

Operation Amber Throne, referred internally as BT01, was the cut first mission in Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Rogue Spear: Black Thorn. It was cut in response to the then recent 9/11 terrorist attacks. Operation Blunt Scroll was also modified to take place in a bus terminal as a result of this. The mission's multiplayer counterpart was called Jumbo Jet.

Only a few references of the mission remained in the game's code in addition to a portion of the mission briefing and several briefing screenshots.[1]

Setting[]

The mission took place on a hijacked plane and was based on the Air France Flight 8969 hijacking that occurred in December 1994. In the mission, Rainbow would have been tasked with rescuing hostages and dispatching the hijackers. References in the R6 string table file noted that the plane would be destroyed should the mission fail.

Briefing[]

Kevin Sweeney - We don’t know anything about this group apart from the fact that they seem to be very well organized and that they think big when it comes to ransom demands. They want, among other things, $20 million wired to an account in the Caymans, as well as enough fuel to allow them to fly anywhere in Europe or North Africa. Based upon the speed of their operation, this is a team of professionals. We just don’t have any idea whom they’re working for, or what they want besides the money and the jet fuel.

This is not the first time we’ve seen a situation like this in France. A very similar incident took place in Marseilles back in 94, when a French airliner was hijacked. Hopefully, the parallels are just a coincidence.

Developer Response[]

An email exchange with Ubisoft Entertainment explained the decision to remove the mission from the game:

"As for the BT01 mission, it was a plane hijacking. Considering the events on 9-11, it was felt that leaving that mission in the game would be in poor taste. Granted you are taking the terrorists out before anything bad happens, the scenario just hit too close to home. As a result, that mission was removed on a worldwide basis. "
