Roland Kunst was born in Eindhoven, Netherlands in 1979. His father died in an industrial accident in 1988. He attended the University of Amsterdam from 1997 to 1999. Kunst was a ctive with the student branch of De Groenen, the Dutch Green Party, before dropping out of school in October of 1999. Afterwards, he joined the Phoenix Group.
After a short time as a member of the Phoenix Grouo, Kunst realized he was in over his head. On September 5, 2000, the Phoenix Group took over a dam in Hungary and set explosives. Kunst contacted Rainbow and agreed to give them information about the group if he was safely extracted from the Dam. Once in custody, Kunst revealed the existence of an American arm of the Phoenix Group. He also claimed that they were planning to release a deadly bioweapon within the next month and that they were developing it at a secret facility near Twin Fall, Idaho. Anne Lang, who was serving as an advisor to Rainbow, was secretly conspiring with the Phoenix Group and downplayed the validity of Kunst's information in order to prevent them from raiding the facility. Despite this, Rainbow confirmed the location of the facility and conducted the raid.
Friends describe Kunst as excitable and idealistic.
