Julien "Rook" Nizan is a Defending Operator featured in Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege. A Heavy Armored Operator, Rook's unique gadget is a bag of five R1N "Rhino" Armor Plates. These Armor Plates can be picked up and equipped for added damage resistance.

Biography

In school, Nizan excelled at athletics specifically in Track and Field. The youngest son of a working-class family, he enlisted in the Gendarmerie Nationale at eighteen and found himself assigned to the Highway Patrol unit. During basic training, Nizan discovered his aptitude for firearms, a skill that he would continue to develop and master over them during his time with the Gendarmerie Nationale. His skill with a rifle eventually attracted the attention of the GIGN.

Psychological Profile

Nizan is idealistic and trusting. He can be impulsive and must self-regulate in order to remain on task. When his focus is clear, he is decisive and driven to complete the task at hand.

Gameplay Overview

Rook is a functionally very simple Operator to utilize and understand. For new players, he is a satisfying starting Op when trying to learn the ropes of the game.

As Rook

  • When worn, Rook's Armor Plates grants 20% damage resistance (damage taken reduced to 80%).
  • Although the Armor Plate works similarly to increasing the Operator's armor rating by over one level (e.g. making Light Armored Operators sturdier than a normal Medium Armored Operator), it does not reduce the Operator's movement speed.
  • Armor Plates guarantee that the Operator wearing it is downed instead of killed when shot. However, take note that being shot in the head, or hit by any more bullets after being downed will still be lethal.
  • When downed, the Operator will lose their Armor Plate. Thus, if there happens to be some extra Plates left, the Operator can and should go over and pick it up.
  • While the Armor Plate insures that the Operator is downed, the DBNO policy of "can only be downed once per round" applies. Wearing a new pair of Plates after being downed once will not prevent the Operator's death the next time they are shot down.
  • Rook's Armor Plates come in a satchel which he can place down. In it, there will be five Armor Plates ready to be picked up.
  • Because Rook does not need to attend to the satchel for other Operators to equip it, it is recommended that he places it down as soon as he can.
  • The satchel is destructible, and all leftover Plates will disappear with it. Therefore, be careful not to shoot/melee it before all allies pick it up.
  • If all Plates have not been picked up, and the Preparation Phase is over, Rook can decide on destroying the satchel as enemy Operators are also able to interact with the Plates if able.
  • Rook will not lose points for destroying the satchel; allies will under the pretense of "destroying a teammate's gadget", which they are.
  • Rook should communicate with teammates before destroying the satchel, in the case that they were simply forgetful in not picking it up.
  • Unlike other gadgets, Rook cannot pick up the satchel once dropped, so it is best if he places it in an accessible location that is away from the line of sight of windows, hatches and doorways.

As an Ally

  • When Rook is on the team, pick up his Armor Plate once it's dropped. There is literally no downside to wearing the Plate aside from a few seconds used up during the Preparation Phase.
  • If Rook does not place down the Armor Plates immediately, attend to other business as a Defender, such as reinforcing walls and hatches or using one's own gadgets. However, communicate with Rook to let them know that he is making his allies wait for the Armor Plates.
  • Like any player, Rook can be forgetful in destroying the satchel when the action phase starts and there are leftover Armor Plates within. Communicate with Rook, and if they are unresponsive, allies can take responsibility in destroying it for him.
  • Rook works especially well with fellow GIGN defending Operator Doc. With his Stim Pistol at hand, he is able to heal allies, revive downed Operators from afar along with granting Operators an Overheal. These qualities shine with the damage reducing Armor Plates that guarantees DBNO.

As an Enemy

  • While the Armor Plates may prevent a Defender from dying, and instead be downed, they are not impervious. Make sure to confirm the kill or shoot them in the head to bypass the Plates' defense.
  • To the annoyance of the Defending Operators, dance around the satchel when droning during the preparation phase. The Defenders might accidentally shoot the satchel when there are still Armor Plates within.
  • If there are still armor plates left behind and you are given the chance, you can pick up the Plates for yourself. Be careful though, as Rook could be using it as a trap.
  • Even with the Plates on, Operators will die from multiple explosions, such as Fuze's Cluster Charges, along with melee attacks like anything else.
  • Twitch's Shock Drone and Capitão's asphyxiating bolts will deal consistent damage across all armor ratings, making the Armor Plates ineffective in reducing their damage.

Loadout Description

The GIGN’s R1N “Rhino” Armor contains a hot-pressed boron ceramic plate designed to stop small-arms fire from penetrating the chest cavity as well as offering small protection against trauma caused by back-face deformation. They are stored in a light-weight sturdy satchel for rapid field deployment.

The trauma plates were initially designed as a low profile ballistics shield for “trust exercises”. Nizan was first introduced to the trauma plate when he was on the receiving end of a .357 Magnum. The protection they provide and the ease in which a damaged plate could be replaced made the trauma plates a valuable addition to Team Rainbow’s defenses.
