Trivia

SPAS stands for Special Purpose Automatic Shotgun in all countries except the United States.  It was retroactively changed to stand for Sporting Purpose Automatic Shotgun to circumvent upcoming firearm legislation, but this had little effect on its status as an "Assault Shotgun" according to the legislation.

The SPAS 12 has two different versions, the only changes being the butt stock and safety switch.

  • The factory version, featured in game, has a folding sheet metal stock that can fold over the top of the weapon, with a small hole in it so one could still see the sights.  Strangely, it is missing a hook that attached to the bottom of the butt, which one could rotate to the side and use as an arm brace to ease one handed shooting, or as a carry handle when the stock was folded.  The safety switch is a small lever that one rotated 180 degrees to engage.
  • The revised version featured a pistol grip, fixed stock combo, much like the stock on Hibana's Supernova, and a push button safety as opposed to the lever safety to remedy concerns about the weapon discharging when readying it to fire.  Sources say around 80% of SPAS 12's had this issue.
  • During the SPAS 12's safety recall, the aforementioned upcoming legislation went into action (1994 AWB), and import and export of what were defined as "Assault Weapons" was restricted.  As a result, only a small number of the SPAS 12s were fitted with the new safeties by Franchi in Italy, most of them being Police issue weapons, since many departments were still allowed to use "Assault Weapons" like it.
  • American gunsmiths did come up with their own solutions to the safety issue and offered services to fix it themselves, particularly with fitting the new style stock to avoid the ban.  Still, over half of the SPAS 12s in the US remain unmodified.
  • A feature that the SPAS 12 shares with the M3 Super 90 is that it can switch between semi-auto and pump-action, semi-auto being for normal shells and pump-action being used for low power, specialty or non-lethal rounds that would fail to chamber a new round on semi-auto.  While the vast majority of games do not show this feature of the weapon, Valkyrie uses it in its intended semi-automatic mode with regular full-sized shells.
