Russian Special Purpose Forces or Spetsnaz (Russian: Войска Специального Назначения; Спецназ) is an umbrella term for any special forces in Russian, literally "force of special purpose".

CTU History

Created in 1974, Spetsnaz are members of Russian units dedicated to counter-terrorism, paramilitary and covert operations. They're tasked with protecting Russia's strategic installations, both domestic and international, though little is known is about the exact nature of their mission.

In Rainbow Six Siege, the icon of the Spetsnaz is actually the logo of Spetsgruppa Alfa, which is the primary unit of the Spetsnaz, in the TsSN FSB.
All Spetsnaz Operator models feature the letters "ФСБ" on their back, which stands for the Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation (Федеральная служба безопасности Российской Федерации), to which the Spetsgruppa Alfa is a part of.
The Spetsnaz are the only operators of the base game to sport circular suppressors on their pistols.
