The HK21 is a general purpose machine gun made by Heckler & Koch in 1961. It, like many of H&K's weapons, is based on the successful G3 assault rifle. The weapon is in use with the armed forces of several Asian, African and Latin American countries. t is chambered in the 7.62x51mm NATO round is fed from a variety of disintegrating belt ammunition. It can be modified to accept the G3's 20-round box magazine, or a 50-round drum magazine designed for the weapon.

Although the original HK21 itself does not appear in the Rainbow Six universe, there are variants of the weapon that have:

  • The HK21E is a magazine-fed variant chambered in its native 7.62×51mm NATO caliber.
  • The HK23E is a 5.56x45mm NATO conversion of the HK21E.
  • The G8A1 is a Bundeswehr and Bundespolizei designation of the Heckler & Koch HK11.

The HK21, HK21E, HK23E and G8A1 are categorized as light machine guns in the Rainbow Six universe.

Rogue Spear[]

The 7.62mm 21E3 LMG is a weapon featured in Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Rogue Spear, introduced in the Urban Operations expansion.

Based on the 7.62 G3A3 framework, the 7.62mm 21E3 LMG is a light machine gun firing the 7.62x51mm round from a 100 round box magazine. This round packs more punch than the 5.56x45mm round. In addition, the 7.62mm 21E3 LMG has a single shot and three round burst option. It is more accurate than the M249 SAW, but is harder to control when moving around. As with the 5.56 M249 LMG, this weapon is best used from a stable firing stance.

Raven Shield[]

Two variants of the HK21 are featured in Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six 3: Raven Shield: the 21E and 23E.

Siege[]

"GSG 9 LMG, accurate in short range. Capable of long range controlled fire."
— In-game description

The G8A1 is a light machine gun featured in Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege. It is available for use by IQ and Amaru.[1]

Overview[]

The G8A1 has a fast firing rate and utilizes a 50-round drum magazine, allowing it to reload faster than those that use belt-feed systems. Its fast firing rate of 850 and relatively high damage output combined, allow the G8A1 to perform on Assault Rifle levels in terms of killing power, while retaining its magazine size advantage as an LMG. The slow ADS time of the LMG class can be compensated by using the angled grip attachment, while the recoil remains relatively manageable.

Pros[]

  • High overall damage
  • High rate of fire
  • Quick reload
  • High magazine capacity
  • High reserve ammo amount

Cons[]

  • Slow ADS time compared to similar weapons in the Assault Rifle class

Trivia[]

Vegas[]

  • In Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Vegas and its sequel, the fire selector for the 21E is erroneously locked on safe at all times.

Siege[]

  • Despite the in-game designation, the G8A1 weapon is a hybrid of the 5.56mm belt-fed Heckler & Koch HK23 and the 5.56mm mag-fed Heckler & Koch HK13: The magazine well is a key feature of the HK13, but the receiver design, with its longer ejection port and a large, tubular brass deflector, is almost never found on the mag-fed HK machine guns, and instead comes from the belt-fed HK machine guns like the HK23. It has a G3 rear sight and added rails.
  • The G8A1 is modeled with the X Products X-91 50-round drum magazine.
  • When compared to the V308, the use of significantly smaller drum magazines would suggest the G8A1 is being used in a 5.56 NATO magazine-fed configuration, a possibility since the HK21's design allows for modular caliber conversions.
