Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Extraction, formerly known as Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Quarantine, is a squad based tactical shooter and the seventeenth installment in the Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Franchise. The game was initially announced on June 6, 2019 at E3 2019 and was released on January 20, 2022.[1]

Inspired by the Outbreak event, the game is set several years in the future and tasks three-players to complete objectives and fight off the increasing threat of a biological parasite known as the Archæans. It sees the return of various gameplay mechanics and Operators of Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege.

Synopsis[]

Several years after the 2018 outbreak in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico, the Chimera Parasite broke containment and subsequently spread to other areas in the United States. Most notably: New Mexico, New York City, San Francisco, and Alaska. Over the years, the Parasite has adapted to Earth and have evolved into the Archæans. Rainbow established a new division, the Rainbow Exogenous Analysis & Containment Team (REACT) and set up containment zones around afflicted areas. As the Archæans grow stronger, REACT must enter these zones to gather any information they can in order to find a way to stop them.

Overview[]

Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Extraction tasks a one-to-three-player team of Operators that must work together to complete various tasks within Active Containment Zones. Deploying in these zones for a mission is known as an Incursion. Only one Operator may be chosen for an Incursion and can be upgraded through subsequent playthroughs. REACT Tech is equipment that players can select before entering an Incursion in order to help handle certain situations or to compliment the Operators chosen by their teammates.

Players will only receive one life per Incursion. Should an Operator be downed, they will enter the MIA status and cannot be chosen from again until they are rescued. This risk and reward system makes communication between teammates key to completing Incursions successfully. Voice and text chat are supported to satisfy this need.

Like Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege, the game features a destruction system that allows players to break structures by planting explosives on them or to make bullet holes on walls by shooting it. The environments of the game feature a layered material system, in which environmental objects of different materials show different reactions to player's attack. A bullet penetration system is featured, in which bullets deal less damage when they hit enemies through structures. Players may also fortify their location against enemies by setting up Reinforced Walls and Barricade around the area as well as deploying unique abilities to help defend the area.

Operators[]

Similar to Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege, the game features a character-based system for players to select from when entering an Active Containment Zone. The game currently features 20 playable Operators. Operators must first be unlocked and can be upgraded to improve their effectiveness in missions. Each Operator has a unique skill and are specialized for a respective role.

All Operators feature three different statuses: Operational, Inactive, and MIA. All Operators start with Operational status and can be deployed on any Incursion. If an Operator returns from an Incursion below a certain amount of health, they will receive the Inactive status and cannot be chosen from until their health returns to Operational status. If an Operator receives critical damage or is unable to extract from an Incursion, they will be covered in REACT Foam to prevent infection will be given the MIA status, unless they are put into an extraction pod during the same Incursion, doing so will result the Operator being inactive instead. They must then be rescued from the in the Active Containment Zone where they fell and can not be chosen from until this is accomplished. Should all Operators be MIA, players will still have at least three Operators at their disposal to rescue MIA Operators.

Stealth is advised as Archæans react to their environment and will call for reinforcements if alerted. Maps are also covered with Sprawl which will slow Operators and buff any Archæan caught within it.

Weapons and Equipment[]

The game features a total of 69 weapons and 25 gadgets. Weapons are tied to specific Operators and are unlocked by achieving Operator advancement levels. Gadgets are tied to Development Milestone levels. Obtaining a level will reward a REACT Token which is used to unlock a gadget.
