The XM8 is a derivative of the G36 rifle that was originally based off of the OICW (Objective Individual Combat Weapon) program. The XM8 is an assault rifle manufactured by Heckler and Koch that chambers the 5.56x45mm NATO round. The weapon never got out of its prototype stage, hence its "X" designation. The weapon was usually equipped with an integral red dot scope.[1]
There is another variant of the XM8 that appeared in the Rainbow Six universe. This variant is simply named the M8.
The XM8 is categorized as an assault rifle in the Rainbow Six universe. The XM8 appears in Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Lockdown, while the M8 appears in both Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Vegas, and Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Vegas 2.

Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Vegas 1 and 2
- In real life, the weapon is known as the XM8. Presumably in this universe, the XM8 has passed its prototype stage and the U.S. Military adopted the rifle and has dropped the "X" prefix.
- Rather than being modeled off the U.S. version of the rifle, the M8 that appears in the series appears to be modeled off the Malaysian version, because of the accessory rail that extends to the end of the carrying handle.
- The M8's iron sights completely disappear upon mounting an optic.
