Siu "Ying" Mei Lin (Chinese: 蕭美蓮[1]) is an Attacking Operator featured in Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege, introduced in the Operation Blood Orchid expansion.[2]

Biography

Born in the comfortable Central district of Hong Kong, Siu Mei Lin was a close protection operative before joining the Special Duties Unit (SDU). With her acute reflexes and cunning CQB methods, she took the lead on several VIP and witness protection operations.

Having deployed an explosive short-range power and combat skills, she joined an elite security service school after graduation. Aiming to become an all-purpose operative, she traveled to a female exclusive training facility in Tel Aviv, Israel. She spent two years there, developing an expertise in firearms and driving maneuvers. Part of Operation High Sun.

After completing her program she returned to Hong Kong, where she ensured the protection of several high risk profiles. In 2008, she reoriented her toward the police force after being involved in a kidnapping situation.

She was first recruited to review the processes used by the Police Tactical Force's Security Wing. During this time, her interest to lead international rescue operations grew, which drove her to apply to the SDU.

As a Flying Tiger (SDU), she uses her experience in close protection to ensure minimum casualties while leading high risk operations amidst Hong Kong's dense urban population.[3]

Psychological Profile

Her easy-going manner allows her to blend in, making her clients and teammates feel both secure and comfortable. Shows potential signs of post-traumatic stress disorder. She admitted having flashbacks of the car crash when she rushes into high risk situations involving a number of civilians. Her extreme driving maneuvers may be a way for her to cope with stress, to assert control over those memories.[4]

Gameplay Description

Blinding enemies with her versatile Candela grenades, Ying can either send them rolling on the ground into a room of enemies or plant it against a wall to surprise them. Having the capability to be timed, Ying can either use it for quick gunfights or manipulate them tactically when the need for either is called for. What is certain is that the Candelas are not your typical stun grenades.

As Ying

  • Candelas are special containers, each holding 6 flashes in them, each of which works like a Stun Grenade.
  • When rolled into a room, the Candela will fire flashes in a star pattern (5 flashes as the corners then 1 in the middle), and will detonate in the order they are fired.
  • If it is deployed on a breakable surface, it will fire 5 flashes in a line and drop the 6th flash in front of the Candela charge. The 6th flash will detonate first, followed by the rest detonating in the order they are fired.
  • Unlike Stun Grenades, the effective range of the flash are far larger in size, as it reach across entire hallways.
  • The Candela is also considered as an object that can be destroy via gunfire, so throwing or rolling it inconspicuously is the best option when facing highly attentive Defenders.
  • Jäger's Magpies can target either the Candela container itself or each of its individual flashes. Thus, it may be a good strategy to decommission all his Magpies by tactically deploying a Candela so that all six flashes are taken out instead of the container itself.
  • The Candelas can be thrown like regular grenades, but they have a few other deployment options:
  • Like the Frag Grenade, it can be cooked before release. Opposite to them though, cooking a Candela will delay its fuze, not shorten it.
  • Without being cooked, the Candela will unleash the flashes once it hits the ground, or after an extended amount of time of being in flight. The latter can be observed when tossing it high into the air outside.
  • There are three lights on the Candela that will progressively light up; for each one lit, the Candela will roll along the ground for a little bit longer before firing off its flashes. You can roll it under barricades or through drone holes.
  • Unlike other grenades, while rolling into an obstacle, Candelas will not bounce away in an angular direction. It will continue rolling in the direction it was thrown towards, rolling along a wall or obstacle even.
  • Barbed Wire will slow down the Candelas' rolling speed.
  • Alternatively, the Candela can be used similarly to Fuze's Cluster Charges by deploying it on a breachable surface so it fires the flashes into the room on the other side. Cooking your release here will set an increasingly long delay timer. Candelas are vulnerable to destruction though.
  • Ying wears special glasses that make her immune to her own flashes.
  • She is not immune to other forms of flashes, such as Stun Grenades and Blitz's Flash Shield.
  • Allies are also not immune to the flashes, as per usual with all other flashes. Communicate to avoid flashing allies.

As an Ally

  • Candelas are terrific for breaching into a stronghold, especially with good coordination. Communicate with Ying to time assaults.
  • Be wary that Candelas can blind other Attackers too, so if Ying deployed a Candela, take a step back if possible before moving forward.
  • Thatcher, IQ and Twitch can be a helpful allies when faced with a Jäger, as they can take out the Magpies before having the chance to take out Ying's Candelas.
  • Operators with Shields can work well with Ying, as they can enter a room safely while being protected from the front, even if they are blinded by the Candelas in the process.
  • For this reason, Montagne can be a powerful frontman, entering the objective room without need to worry about being blinded. As long as he does not act rash and keep his Extended Shield up, he can storm rooms safely.
  • Fuze can prove to be a powerful partner to Ying when a breachable surface is available. After Ying blinds enemies within with her Candela, Fuze can rain explosives on those inside without them knowing.
  • When it comes to utility, Capitão can be a good ally, using either his Tactical Crossbow, more specifically his micro smoke grenades, to cause mayhem on unsuspecting Defenders.

As an Enemy

  • Candelas can be shot and destroyed by bullets and explosions, so if skilled enough, reacting by firing it is a valid option unlike other grenades.
  • Don't underestimate the effective range of the Candela's flash. When seeing Ying tossing one out, take cover if possible.
  • Take consideration that Mute's Signal Disruptor will not prevent a Candela from deploying its flashes through a breachable surface due to the device being activated through a timer, not a remote device.
  • Candelas are an acquirable target for Jäger's Magpies, shooting the entire container out, thus preventing all six flashes.
  • Even if the Candela is allowed to dispatch its flashes, Jäger's Magpies can still target each separate flashes it sends out, although not so practical.
  • Bandit's Shockwires are capable of destroying Candelas, much like it does to Drones.

Candela x 3

"Cluster of flash charges that can either be anchored on a surface or rolled out like a grenade."
— Candela Description

Inspired by the new breed of stun grenades showcased by the SAS, this mercury and magnesium based explosive creates a multitude of blinding flashes. The Candela device releases a cluster of flash charges that can either be anchored on surfaces or thrown out as a grenade. This non-lethal explosive was specifically adapted to lead operations in Hong Kong’s densely populated areas, hereby limiting the risk of casualties. Coming with tinted eye pieces and earplugs, this device is geared to give your team a few precious seconds to break in and neutralize enemies.
